Portal Tutoring Offers Curriculum to Help Teens and Adults Write More Effectively
Ever get bad grades in English class for your writing? Ever had a college professor ask you where on earth you learned to write? Do you have to know how to write a business letter in order to pass a state test for competency in education? Ever had to write a report or evaluation of a student or a co-worker and been at a loss to know how to organize your material? Have you ever received a poor evaluation at work because your writing skills were not up to par? Have you ever lost a sale because the ad you wrote was so bad that nobody wanted to buy your product? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then Portal Tutoring has the answer you're seeking. Portal Tutoring is pleased and proud to offer a brand new curriculum for teaching students to write well. It consists of two parts, a series of pamphlets on writing specific small documents, and an independent study course which includes a textbook written by Ann K. Parsons and voice classes to accompany this book. our Writing Small Documents pamphlets, and our Writing For Today our textbook and voice classes combination which forms an independent study module. We are sure that one of these two curricula can help you to write more effectively.
But there are thousands of textbooks and pamphlets on writing, what makes Portal Tutoring's offerings unique? Most text books on writing concentrate on the techniques of writing: grammar, spelling, formatting etc. Portal Tutoring's curricula concentrate on the thought process behind writing. After all, one must think about what one is going to write, even if for only a millisecond. Our pamphlets and Independent study class teach you to organize that thought process so that when you get ready to put pen to paper or hand to keyboard, you can produce a clear, concise, and well organized document.
Writing Small Documents
Most people who write documents write small things, letters, reports, notes, email, evaluations, essays and advertisements. These are everyday, down-to-earth documents. You probably write one of the list above at least once a week. Those of us who write longer documents like research papers, novels, plays and short stories write these small documents too, and what is most interesting is that large documents like research papers or novels are written in the same way that a small document is except that it is longer. A novel is a story told in many chapters. Each of those chapters is broken into paragraphs which are broken into sentences which are broken into words. If you write a two paragraph note to a friend explaining what happened to you last Saturday afternoon, you use the same thinking skills you would in order to write an historical novel about the Civil War. If you write a five paragraph essay about why you like elephants, you use those same skills when writing a fifty-page research paper about elephant training in Northern India.
That is why Ann Parsons and Portal Tutoring decided to create the Writing Small Documents Series of pamphlets. They are designed to help you write a small document. By using what you have learned from reading these pamphlets, you can, if you wish, move on to writing large documents, or, you can simply use these pamphlets as reference when you want to write an everyday small document.
